Muralists transform Laurel charter school into global venture

– Article by Andrew Michaels, reporter for the Laurel Leader

Our murals are inspired by the people who commission them.

Providing a professional product is a priority. We love to work with individuals until a great idea is fully realized by conducting research and generating different design options. While paint is our primary material, we have experience working with sculptural elements, printed photography and graphics on a large scale.

Murals can make a powerful statement. They have the ability to transform mundane or neglected space into beautiful, welcoming environments, they share ideas and information to the community in an accessible format, and they create a sense of identity associated with a place.

Spectrum Studio grew out of NS Studios, owned by long-time Baltimore-based artist, Nancy Scheinman, since 1997.  Continuing one of NS Studios’ missions, we offer workshops with students in school partnerships to support project-based learning.

Hanna Moran

Hanna Moran is a muralist and painter working in her hometown of Baltimore, MD. Hanna graduated from Sewanee: The University of the South in 2011 where she majored in Fine Art and minored in French. She began painting murals during her summers home from college, and took a job as a full time muralist after graduating. Hanna now has over 5 years of mural experience and 3 years of experience managing teams of artists on mural projects.  Hanna has worked on a wide range of projects, from school and residential interiors and set design to large-scale screen painting. Having worked as a nanny and private art instructor, Hanna particularly enjoys projects in which she gets to work directly with students in a workshop format.

In her personal practice, Hanna is drawn to dreamlike, atmospheric landscapes and frequently paints from photographs she has collected from her hikes and travels. Her influences include Peter Doig, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, and Katharina Grosse.

Maura Dwyer

Maura is a native of Baltimore and received her BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture and Video from Maryland Institute College of Art. Following school, she worked in the local film industry with talented art directors as her mentors until she felt the need to apply her passion for collaborative work to more community-based projects. This brought her back to her first love: Narrative painting on a large scale.

As owner of Spectrum Studios, Maura works with an array of small business owners, non-profits, residents and artists to enhance environments with original artwork that fits the clients’ needs. Her personal work consists of collaborations with Baltimore theater companies in props and set design. She is currently working on broadening her skill base by taking certificate courses in design and illustration, hoping to share those possibilities with future clients and workshop opportunities.

Lindy Swan

Lindy Swan originally hails from a small town in Wisconsin, and moved to Baltimore to receive her BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She stayed on the East Coast to begin working with Spectrum soon after graduation. Bringing art to public spaces and changing environments was always something she took an interest in, and working with the studio was a great opportunity. While she looks forward to every new project, her favorite assignments involve text or portraits.

While she ultimately found her calling as a painter, her original interest in art began with illustration and its narrative possibilities. She draws her biggest inspiration from painters like Edward Hopper, David Hockney, and John Singer Sargent, and from photographers like Gregory Crewdson and Vivian Maier. Recently her personal work has focused more on environmental narratives, but she will always return to portraits and the figure.
